“If you did not know any better, it might have looked like I was failing. But that was not the case. I was learning.”
This story comes from the perspective of a robot, giving it a very practical, logical tone throughout. The first third of the book has a ‘young’ robot, learning about its world, and sharing it with us, so the power of the writing doesn’t really start shining through until later in the book. Gradually the robot not only has an increased vocabulary, and more experiences, but as it ventures outside its routine, and comfort zone, it starts to both ask questions and truly express its personality in quirky and humorous ways.
The Last Human is, at heart, A story of three pals who decide to help the new kid in town with their crazy, self-appointed mission, only to come to realize that Emma has been struggling to trust them just as much as they did upon first meeting.
A wonderful story about the contradictions contained in each of us, the complexities of history and trying to understand it, and the struggles of creating a team, or a society, and working together.
I checked this out from my local library, and once it got rolling I really enjoyed it.
